LEGO A Go-Go

The tenth is well underway

The latest assignment in basic interface design classes was to create a concept for a tangible music interface. A sequenzer not involving anything digital. Melodies, harmonies and such should be easily somewhat comprehensible by looking at a collection of physical objects.

Teams were, as always, drawn by lot. I found myself being part of a highly talented ensemble, consisting of brilliant product design student Anna (also an avid mulled wine drinker) and, well, me. After tossing about some ideas, we settled on using LEGO.

A minuet by Bach, transposed in LEGO.

Just for you, I’ve translated our presentation into English.1 There’s sound and music on the last few slides, so turn it up to 9 or 10 or so. Presentation: Tangible Music Interface

Next up (when I can be arsed): the awesome ideas that didn’t quite make it because they involved tickling and punching babies or pushing grannies on wheelchairs down the stairs.

  1. A whopping 16 words, originally—including the name of the class, the professor and our group members on the first slide. I then proceeded to add 35 more words and a whole slide because I wanted to feel industrious.
